Hydrogeology

The Hydrogeology group (Prof. Mario Schirmer) tackles the pressing regional and increasingly global challenges which affect groundwater and its protection as a natural resource. Scientific studies into the preliminary and follow-up protection of groundwater always take social and economic aspects into account. The group's regional activities include aspects of prealpine and alpine hydrogeology, global change, groundwater and surface water interactions, the passive and semi-passive remediation of large aquifers and the problems of groundwater in urban areas.

Water Quality and Management

The group Water Quality and Management (Dr. Christian Stamm) investigates how and to what extent agriculture and settlements affect water quality. The focus is on (organic) micropollutants but also considers heavy metals and the influence of nutrients and are working on practical concepts for water body monitoring.

Hydrological Modeling

In Hydrological Modeling group (Dr. Fabrizio Fenicia) the focus is on hydrology and water quality modeling at the catchment scale. Its general aim is to develop the theoretical framework and the practical tools to inform model decisions and develop targeted model applications. These instruments are used to investigate catchment behavior and improve predictions.

Urban Flood Risk

In the group of Urban Flood Risk (Dr. Joao Paulo Leitao) new methods to improve urban hydrology/ hydraulic modelling accuracy are developed, taking advantage of newly available data resources. A key interest is the realistic assessment of urban flood risk.
